Becky Wildkid Luckily, I had chance to join the International Beer Festival in Germany. Munich Oktoberfest Beer Festival is the original beer festival all over the world. It started from 1810, which is celebrated for Bavarian Prince Lourdes and Wales’s Princess Dai Lisi‘s wedding. October in Germany, is the season of bumper harvest of corn and hop. So the Munich Beer Festival, has another name as “Oktoberfest.” This traditional festival continues until today, it also has becoming a world-well-known festival. Except few tragedies like the war and spreading cholera, the Munich Oktoberfest has been held 170 sessions until today.
October 2, 2006, we had the opportunity to feel “Oktoberfest” with other 3000 cities people around the world. Every day, more then 10 huge beer sheds of beer company which can accommodate almost 100000 people each shed were fully booked. We were there at 9 o’clock night time and the sheds were completely full, the police were everywhere around entrance and exit. Some drunkers had been kicked out after they got pissed, funny though, lol. Inside of the Shed, there were full of young people standing everywhere, you could see hotties in sexy top; guys in traditional Bavarian dress. Everyone with pint of beer in their hands, when the Bavari band started to play Bavarian folk songs, almost everyone jumped on the table dancing and singing loud together! That hilarious pic will always be in my mind.
Unfortunately you have to make a reservation to get a seat there and the deposit was very expensive, so we could only ask waitress to get the drink for us. However we enjoyed the atmosphere and everything. That was very cool experience! Outside of the Shed there was large playground like amusement park, all the crowd standing under the Ferris wheel. Some people were selling the bread and sausage, on the sideroad, but we couldn’t find any beer. However the main character of Oktoberfest wasn’t only beer, there was the traditional German food as well, such as German-style hand-braised chicken, Munich white sausages, German pork knuckle.
Of course, the most classical food has to be the German pork knuckle, with dozens of spices boiled for 3 hours, then deep fry until the skin color become golden brown! Perfect golden crispy skin, tasty juice meat gives you the best chewing feeling but isn’t greasy at all, plus the special pickled cabbage, extremely delicious, cant wait to taste again. However the roast chicken with beer should be “most matching taste” choice. I have heard that according to the record of General Assembly from last Oktoberfest (2003), 68000 copies of the German pig knuckles had been eaten, but that number was only 10% of roast chicken with beer, hehehe!!
The reason why Oktoberfest is famous not only because it is the world’s largest beer event but also because it completely retained the Bavarian folk style and customs. In the field, we feel a strong atmosphere of the Bavarian nation. Many dressed in buckskin pants, vests and other staff in national costumes of the Bavarian Beer Cup held walking through the streets, then everyone shouted “Cheers” that atmosphere was very lively. In the Oktoberfest, you will never have chance to have single pic by yourself, ‘coz whenever you take out your camera, all the young people will immediately come together and put all strange poses to have a photo with you.
Oktoberfest is a faithful, pure festival in Oktoberfest. It only allows selling high-quality local beer from Munich, Germany. The Bavarian local beer from outside Munich doesn’t even have chance to show up, won’t even thin any foreign brand. Instead of a business fair for Beer Company, Oktoberfest is a real pure traditional beer festival! People always have the impression of Germany as serious, hard working, rigorous, obey orders, disciplined, principled, and lack of humor and enthusiasm nation. But I believe threw Munich Oktoberfest, you will find a different Germany with passion and vibrant.
