My Wild Living Experiences in Ireland & China

The Chinese Moon Festival

The Chinese Moon Festival is on the 15th of the 8th lunar month. It’s also documented as the Mid-autumn fiesta. Chinese culture is tremendously indulged in traditional festivals. Just like Christmas and Thanksgiving in the West, the Moon Festival is one of the majority vital traditional events for the Chinese.

There are many renowned stories related to Moon festival. Legend says that a girl name Chang Er flew to the moon and she lived ever since. You might observe her dancing on the moon throughout the Moon Festival. The Moon Festival is also an event for family reunions. As soon as the full moon rises, families get together to watch the full moon, eat moon cakes, and sing moon poems. With the full moon, the fable, the family unit and the poems, you can’t help thoughts that this is really a perfect world. That is why the Chinese are so warmhearted the Moon Festival.

The Moon Festival is very idealistic and also a romantic one. A wonderful night for the festival is if it is a calm night without layers of cloud and with a little soft breeze from the sea. Lovers spend such a romantic night mutually while tasting the luscious moon cake with some wine while watching the full moon. Even for a couple who can’t be together, they can still take pleasure in the night by watching the moon at the same time so it seems that they are not alone and together at that hour. Much great poetry has been devoted to this loving festival. Hope the Moon Festival will fetch you many happiness.

The moon cake is the delicious foodstuff for the Moon Festival. The Chinese use to eat the moon cake at night with the full moon in the sky.

German Octopus Paul : 2010 South Africa World Cup! I am not the only Star

German Octopus Paul : King of Predictions
My name is Paul; I‘m from Germany; I live in Stockhausen Aquarium, Spanish offer me an air ticket and better living conditions as recently they started loving me hoho. German people want to cook me with lemon and Oliver oil, well what can I say, I love my country; but I love football more. I‘ve got my favorite team just like anyone else. I Predicted this World Cup 8 times and hit 8 times ! Wow, couldn’t believe it myself. Therefore lots of football fans named me ‘The King of Predictions’. They made me believe I should be the greatest World Cup commentary Star this year! haha, Maybe yes, but still hmm…..

Let’s have a look together who else are there those made this world cup so special except me!
PS: The trick of Predict? There is no such thing as psychic, ok? ALL BS! Hehe, have to keep it as secret for myself..

The New World Champions : Spain
The final game wasn’t as excellent as most of the fans imagined still it was the biggest pressure Spanish had faced since the start of world cup games. Even the first game with Swiss wasn’t so tough as the final one! There was a time Netherlands’   intense scraping gave lots of pressure to Spanish players. After many great chances had lost, finally Mr. “White,” Andres Iniesta Lujan last kick end this game perfectly! As the worth of this team in the sum of the highest ranks, the champion Spanish title is actually deserved. But also demonstrate the economic base determines the superstructure is the truth never going to change !
SPANISH FIRST FIFA World Cup Trophy.

Vuvuzelas : We are made In China
Sometimes I really admire some of the great Chinese people; they always are able to make involvement with something totally unrelated! China, the country seems have nothing to do in this year’s South African World Cup! Still the Chinese fans watched the game, only just for fun as well. However you still can hear people asking : who said China did not participate in it, did you hear the noise all around the field ? Didn’t you see everyone was holding a Vuvuzelas! They all Made in China!!!!!!

Well, I’m almost convinced WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Referee’s World CUP
I would say 2010 World Cup is :
South Africa’s World Cup,
African’s World Cup,
World’s World Cup!
but after all it seems more like Referee’s World Cup! None of the previous World Cup referees had so many wrong judgments. Like this year, Larrionda, the main referee of England-German war, blow off the goal which half a meter away from the goal line from Lampard!!

And that is the best explanation of the meaning of This year was The Referee’s World Cup !

The World Cup without SUPER STAR
Rooney left, Messi left, C Lo gone, such superstars who had full of expectations before the match, disappointed completely. South Africans were out of the game so earlier this year! This is the term of the lack of World Cup Super Stars. Frankly speaking, is the lack of a national idol, “Yan Xing”. Germany’s Muller do have the potential to become a star, but his physique is too tall and doesn’t have cute face like Beckham style! So he is difficult to become a national idol. Diego Forlan from Uruguay, his performance in this year’s world cup games was very surprising, but he is also the old fox who already play years in Europe, older, but with no star-like charisma. And Sneijder, INIESTA and others, early years when they play in European professional league, they already proved that they can only be football star, but can’t create scandal in the life like other super stars!

Netherlands – Uncrowned Kings’
The Netherlands became the King without Title again, ITS SAD! Unfortunately, they were that close to the trophy. What if they could just hold on for 5 more minutes insist on dragging penalty kick, then everything could be different! Seriously, they actually had many good chances to win the battle. What if the ‘one on one’ from Arjen Robben could be a success? What if Johnny Heitinga wasn’t sent off, but those are just ifs and buts. The sad part is three times they had chance to reach the Finals and had to just face the runner up trophy. When is their turn to become a real champion team?

Robben will still be standing in the final after four years ?

World Cup is over, life continues, hot weather continues, sleep back to normal…

2010 Football World Cup : Tour football, True fans or fake fans !

Lot of friends of mine are fans of Italy football team in this World Cup game. The day after Italian team lost the game, I had lunch with few of my football fan friends. One guy said “Italy broke my heart, I have very bad mood today, won’t watch any game in this year’s World Cup. I comforted him, take it easy guy, even Italy is gone, but there are still some famous teams like Spain, England, Brazil and Argentina…. well, keep watch though. That guy looked into my eyes said, you are the fake football fan, the true fans should always support one team forever!!

Fake football fans? I never thought myself being as such kind of fan for football. I used to support the Chinese soccer team since 1990s, but as the Team disappointed on many occasions, I began to watch the five major European leagues. I used to get up in the middle of the night watch FA Premier League; Serie A, etc., Well, I know quite a few players and also know what the offside means, Am I still a fake football fan? After that I did some Internet search :

What is the difference between  the true fans and fake fans ? Letz figure out :

True fans will always support their favorite team and fake fans only support which team is stronger and keep changing! True fans predict victory or defeat with a brain, fake fans always predict game by listening other peoples’ option. True fans watch game, fake fans watch players.

True fans watch all the games, even the most boring ones, however fake fans are only willing to watch goal and shot highlights, such as after one long night stay up for one game but no goal by the end; fake fun saying : “shit, not even one goal ? waste my all night”. The true fans would be still proud of the game and enjoy the game, even there wasn’t any goal scored at all!

True fans will be very familiar with their favorite team’s player’s name, position, formation, tactics, style, history etc. Fake fans can’t even remember exactly which player belongs to which team. True football fans have a very strong quality and theoretical knowledge about their own favorite teams and the players. No matter how low the team or the players perform, they will always continue to support their side. Fake fans are always supporting for the popular team who always win. Some of them don’t even know the rules of the game, about which is offside!!

If I take an example of Cristiano Ronaldo, his true fans would have all the details of the small things in his day to day life or even his birth details, however fake fans would only be interested in his controversies in Manchester United. True fans even would go ahead and write some good article or comment on some wonderful read, but fake fans would only abuse our favorite players.

So, I couldn’t’ stop wondering about real fans or fake fans, does it really matter? This year, I cried for Ghana! When I saw some fans holding the banner saying “Ghana makes Africa Proud!” I was really touched !

I clapped for JAPAN football team, even if it is never been my favorite team. I still  love Messi, even Argentina is already gone ! I celebrated for Holland football team when the world was sad for Brazil.

Maybe, yes I am not the true football fan, but so what, I think, the REASON TO WATCH football is to be happy, to enjoy the process, to support your country, to feel the real beat of FOOTBALL! And to be sad or happy with the player together. Therefore, I will continue my passion, to enjoy the World Cup as a FAKE FOOTBALL FAN!

Ps: Tonight : Germany & Spain! LET’S BET :)

The Colorful Worldwide Drinking Culture

French Drinking Culture : TAKE YOUR TIME, DRINK IT SLOW !

Compare with other countries, French people prefer to drink slow. They usually take time to taste the drink from their tongue to their heart! They will slowly slide the drink from the tip of the tongue to the throat, little by little. So in France there is a saying that ‘The better wine you have, the longer time you should take to drink’. Champagnes and Wines from France are world famous. Champagne is prepared for the celebration, whenever there’s a festival, party or just for a happy day. The French people always open the champagne; give a toast and celebrate together. I think champagne should not be taken while having barbecue. Otherwise the smokey taste will take away the real taste of the champagne; what a waste!

France being the country of food and drink, there are many drinking manners; such as “white wine with fish, red wine with meat” and so on. In addition, you should have the proper knowledge of the glasses you use while drinking the French wines, as well.
Obviously, to be a “French Wine Expert”, I still have got long way to go… :)

Greek Drinking Culture :HALF-COCKED !

Greece is the country of four ancient civilizations. The culture of Greece and China are similar in many ways and of course, included the drinking culture as well! In Greece the most famous alcohol should be “ouzo”. Around 42 degrees, ouzo smells like a bit licorice; The proper way to drink ouzo is to put some ice cubes first and gently shake a little, till the clear liquid turn to soft white color then drink it up “enmmmmmm”; it just taste right !!!!

In Greece, people often go to restaurants and bars to drink, but they do not drink like Chinese people, who eat lot of food while drinking. Mostly the Greeks only drink with dried fruits and olives and to drink as a social habit of their culture would be Half-cocked; which means half way to be drunk what we call “Weizui” in Chinese!

British Drinking Culture : ART OF MIXING

British Whiskey was formally introduced in the 1839 plant production, but in 1494, England already started making whiskey with barley. It can make people get fat and moody if you drink too much. Today, the smart British still are the best at making Whiskey such as whiskey with rye, oats, and corn mixed together. As everyone knows Japanese people are very good at copying (hahaha) they always wanted to find out the secret behind British whiskey mixing art. But until now, even they have drinks like ‘Nikka’ and ‘Suntory’, still cannot compare with the British.

South Korean Drinking Culture : DRINKING = MAKING NEW FRIENDS

In South Korea, if u don’t like to drink, you cannot have new friends. Koreans favorite drink is called “The bomb”; so exactly; what is the bomb? Its kind of drink which is mixed with whiskey and beer. It’s extremely strong and easy to make people drunk, thatz the reason they like to drink it more often. Now-a-days, people can find the bomb almost everywhere in South Korea and drinking the bomb even became an important means of socializing! The bomb has become a mode of entertainment for the local people in all kinds of parties as well as in KTVs.

Japanese Drinking Culture : DRINKING = WORKING

Japanese drinking is the same as their daily work. Everyday after work, they must “report back” to the bars. The major decisions of work are never made in office, but the bars and hotels. So, all the bars become a paradise for Japanese men, after work, they never go home without getting drunk enough. Plus I think, Japanese men drinking in this way is to extricate themselves from the pressure of work!

German Drinking Culture : BEER BEER BEER, NOTHING ELSE !!!

The famous German beer is made from barley but as I said before, too much barley can make people fat. When I talk about ‘Germans’ and ‘Beer’, only one thing comes in my mind, BIG!!!! “Beer Belly, Beer Glass, Beer Festival, Beer Garden, Beer Sausage, even underground beer house, all these are “Big”!

Germans have the world’s biggest beer glass, a glass which can hold almost a litter of beer. There are two different ways like “cold beer”(which relates to describe people as graceful) and “beer corpses” (which refers to those who drink too much lying on the roadside). After all, it’s just easy to tell how much the Germans LOVE TO DRINK BEER!

Mexico’s Drinking Culture : UNIQUE

Mexicans are big fans of beer too. Beer in Mexico is not only for drinking, people use it for cooking as well! The Mexican Beer is very unique and is made of agave.

PS: The reason I wrote this article really just because I have been drinking too much everyday, lately !!!!!!! lol. Let’s get pissed !

Xoxo

The Dragon Boat Festival

China has too many festivals to celebrate, sometime its just hard for me to know why to celebrate, I use to think all about festival in China is eating and drinking; lol. However this one, the Dragon Boat Festival, its one of the most traditional festival in china. There is a romantic story behind it, about a great Chinese Historic Celebrity, named Qu Yuan which made it more special than the other festivals in China. Letz go back to some high school reviews about a part of Chinese history.

Qu Yuan, was born in Yichang, 340 BC, during the Warring States Period. In the Period of Warring States, there were seven states struggling among themselves to unify China. Of the seven states, Qin was the strongest and Chu the largest. Qu Yuan was considered to be both; the Famous Chinese Scholar-Statesman and the First Poet in Chinese Literature. During his lifetime, the powerful kingdom of Chu fell into a decline. As a loyal minister, Qu Yuan at first enjoyed the full confidence and respect of his sovereign. Eventually, through the intrigues of his rivals, he was discredited and sent into exile for 20 years.

During those desperate years, Qu Yuan helplessly watched his beloved country became weaker and weaker. In the year 278 BC, the capital of Chu was occupied by troops from Qin. In great pain, Qu Yuan wrote “Lisao” or “The Lament”, the greatest of all his poems. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, he drowned himself in the Milo River which is now in Hunan Province, because he was hopeless about his country’s future.

Qu Yuan died thousands of years ago, but he is remembered every year for his love and loyalty to his country and his people. In his poems, he wrote:

“Long did I sigh and wipe away my tears,
To see my people bowed by grieves and fears.
The people’s sufferings move my heart,
                                                                 Our land I cannot leave”.

People grieve for those who have grieved for them. Each year, during the Duanwu Festival, the day of Qu Yuan’s death, people race dragon boats and eat the pyramid-shaped dumplings named Zongzi to commemorate him. This is believed to be a representation of how the people of Chu tried, at the time, to recover Qu Yuan’s body from the Milo River. They rowed the dragon boat to scare away the fish and threw Zongzi into the river to feed the fish, so they would stay away from Qu Yuan’s body.

To the Chinese the Duanwu Festival is more than the Dragon Boat Race and Zongzi. This day is customarily the time when cleaning and sanitation are stressed, because the fifth lunar month has been believed to be a pestilential and danger-fraught period since antiquity. Every family in my hometown will hang artemisia above the door as a preventive against pestilence and misfortune. And in Wuhan and its adjacent area, some girls will knit little bags with red threads to contain salted duck eggs (one bag contains one egg) and give them to their relatives and friends. Eggs in China are customarily regarded to be a symbol to keep away the evil.

However, people from different area in China may have their special ways to celebrate this festival. In Qingdao I still remember when I was a child, mom used to put a 5 color thread on around my hand to bring good luck and keep away evils. Then you have to throw it into the rain at the first rainy day after the festival. Most of the other places they celebrate by drinking the realger wine; make and collect the sachets, hang some herbs at the door during the Dragon Boat Festival, and so on.

I like Dragon Boat Festival better than the other festivals in China for three reasons: First, enjoy the delicious food, Zongzi and sticky-rice Baba (a kind of food seems like steamed stuffed bun); Second, see the Dragon Boat Race and last but not least, recall the great poet Qu Yuan.

Remember if you are in China during this Special Festival :

Where to go : Hang Zhou, Fu jian, Hong Kong, Hu Bei
What to eat : ZONG ZI, Eggs
What to see : Dragon Boat Racing, Miao Hui

Qingdao International Beer Festival

In the last article, I had told you about my experience in the Munich International Beer Festival, here I am shedding light on the one occured in Qingdao, China. In Qingdao, we can see a lot of German style architecture, buildings… those were the “gifts” from German when it took over of Qingdao apart of that, Germans also brought the beer to Qingdao. Now-a-days, all the architecture buildings already became history; but the beer, it walked into the daily lives of Qing Dao people and it became the special culture of Qingdao.

Because of the famous Qingdao beer, Qingdao people love to drink beer. Qingdao International Beer Festival has developed very fast. The first Qingdao International Beer Festival originated in 1991, till date it has now held 14 sessions.

That was the last day of the Qingdao beer festival, the venue crowded, as we did not have any guide. We decied to eat first, we found the direction on the south side of the food park and went there straight away. Slightly disappointing is that all of China’s “Food City”, “Food Festival” is similar, and no more than Sichuan spicy string, Lanzhou noodles, Northeast bacon pie, Shanghai City God Temple snack, stinky tofu, fried quail and cross the bridge noodle, Sichuan dan dan noodles or something.

Anyway, we weren’t picky, in 3 mins time, some of us already have 3 deep-fried sparrows in left hand, right hand with a piece of cake and mouth with a bacon. However, we didn’t have any soup, just in case we will have some space and strength for beer!

When we were in the “Tsingtao Beer World”, we were completely stunned by the huge crowd inside of the shed which was jam-packed. Luckily some visitors offered us seats beside them to share the drinks together “酒逢知己千杯少, So we bought them a few pint good draft beer as a gesture. We also viewed a wonderful beauty show on stage which was the 44th Miss World final contest show. It was a nightmare for all the local men around.

For the night of the carnival, the organizers invited a professional stylist, to give free make-up to the public. It also distributed more than 2,000 color mask which were made uo of feathers. They were trying to make this closing party into a big Halloween party, hoho. As we had the Olympic Games going on, so me and one of my friend, painted the Chinese flag in our face.

We all were having fun and a blast at the party. Most of the people were dancing, spinning, singing and screaming. Exactly at the center of the shed, the fireworks started to play, everyone felt so high and a little crazy. We even did not realised that we are dancing with some strangers. All were holding hands and drinking together, it was too good of a life time experience. Qingdao Beer Festival is just like the Spring Festival for the local people, if you miss this festival, you will feel that life is missing something. I think the festival which is only for 16 days is just too short to enjoy.

To show the friendship with German Beer Festival, Qingdao Beer built an Asia’s largest beer drinking big tent – and also “German beer village”, brought German top ten beer brands best beer to the show as support, German officials even sent a prestigious Brass Band to perform to public as well !

After all, if you want to ask me, which place I prefer to go again, I would say BOTH !

International Beer Festival in Munich

Luckily, I had chance to join the International Beer Festival in Germany. Munich Oktoberfest Beer Festival is the original beer festival all over the world. It started from 1810, which is celebrated for Bavarian Prince Lourdes and Wales’s Princess Dai Lisi‘s wedding. October in Germany, is the season of bumper harvest of corn and hop. So the Munich Beer Festival, has another name as “Oktoberfest.” This traditional festival continues until today, it also has becoming a world-well-known festival. Except few tragedies like the war and spreading cholera, the Munich Oktoberfest has been held 170 sessions until today.

October 2, 2006, we had the opportunity to feel “Oktoberfest” with other 3000 cities people around the world. Every day, more then 10 huge beer sheds of beer company which can accommodate almost 100000 people each shed were fully booked. We were there at 9 o’clock night time and the sheds were completely full, the police were everywhere around entrance and exit. Some drunkers had been kicked out after they got pissed, funny though, lol. Inside of the Shed, there were full of young people standing everywhere, you could see hotties in sexy top; guys in traditional Bavarian dress. Everyone with pint of beer in their hands, when the Bavari band started to play Bavarian folk songs, almost everyone jumped on the table dancing and singing loud together! That hilarious pic will always be in my mind.

Unfortunately you have to make a reservation to get a seat there and the deposit was very expensive, so we could only ask waitress to get the drink for us. However we enjoyed the atmosphere and everything. That was very cool experience! Outside of the Shed there was large playground like amusement park, all the crowd standing under the Ferris wheel. Some people were selling the bread and sausage, on the sideroad, but we couldn’t find any beer. However the main character of Oktoberfest wasn’t only beer, there was the traditional German food as well, such as German-style hand-braised chicken, Munich white sausages, German pork knuckle.

Of course, the most classical food has to be the German pork knuckle, with dozens of spices boiled for 3 hours, then deep fry until the skin color become golden brown! Perfect golden crispy skin, tasty juice meat gives you the best chewing feeling but isn’t greasy at all, plus the special pickled cabbage, extremely delicious, cant wait to taste again. However the roast chicken with beer should be “most matching taste” choice. I have heard that according to the record of General Assembly from last Oktoberfest (2003), 68000 copies of the German pig knuckles had been eaten, but that number was only 10% of roast chicken with beer, hehehe!!

The reason why Oktoberfest is famous not only because it is the world’s largest beer event but also because it completely retained the Bavarian folk style and customs. In the field, we feel a strong atmosphere of the Bavarian nation. Many dressed in buckskin pants, vests and other staff in national costumes of the Bavarian Beer Cup held walking through the streets, then everyone shouted “Cheers” that atmosphere was very lively. In the Oktoberfest, you will never have chance to have single pic by yourself, ‘coz whenever you take out your camera, all the young people will immediately come together and put all strange poses to have a photo with you.

Oktoberfest is a faithful, pure festival in Oktoberfest. It only allows selling high-quality local beer from Munich, Germany. The Bavarian local beer from outside Munich doesn’t even have chance to show up, won’t even thin any foreign brand. Instead of a business fair for Beer Company, Oktoberfest is a real pure traditional beer festival! People always have the impression of Germany as serious, hard working, rigorous, obey orders, disciplined, principled, and lack of humor and enthusiasm nation. But I believe threw Munich Oktoberfest, you will find a different Germany with passion and vibrant.

Coming up soon, Qingdao International Beer Festival!!

Celebrating Irish Culture – St. Patrick’s Day from a Chinese Girl

Ireland, for me is like my second home, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is just like celebrating Chinese Spring Festival! Like the Chinese, the Irish have a long history of economic migration, and have settled in many countries around the world, particularly in the USA.

As any traveller knows, Ireland is a very green, rural country, thanks to the amount of rainfall, with some areas seeing rain for 225 days in a year.

The colour green is predominant on St Patrick’s Day as that is the national colour of Ireland, which is sometimes called the Emerald Isle. All of the countries in the British Isles have a Patron Saint’s Day but the biggest celebrations are always held on March 17th, Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day.

For people who live in Ireland and Northern Ireland it is a national holiday, but in the wider world it is seen as an opportunity to explore one of the most emblematic aspects of Irish culture – getting boozed up.

The preferred tipple for most people on St Patrick’s Day is a pint of Irish stout, a heavy, black beer, although others may plump for a glass of Irish whiskey. Irish pubs can be found in every corner of the world. Most major capitals in the west will have at least a few. Even in South America and the Far East one can enjoy a pint of stout while listening to traditional Irish music. Are these bars opened to serve homesick Irish expats living abroad? With a population of about 4 million, Ireland could hardly provide enough expats to keep a fraction of them up and running. It is owing to the reputation of Irish pubs, and Irish drinking culture in general, that they can be found wherever there are large communities of Americans and Europeans.

Fun, music and drink’; this is a sign commonly seen on Irish pubs and it indicates the kind of atmosphere that these bars aim to create. The key to a successful bar is the atmosphere it exudes. Many of the Irish theme bars found abroad strive to recreate the ambience of bars in Ireland by playing Irish music and decorating the interiors with Irish paraphernalia.

Because of their large population of people of Irish descent, cities like New York and Boston have enormous St Patrick’s Day parades, where hundreds of thousands of marchers and millions of spectators parade through the city. But the American city of Chicago goes even further; since 1961 the Chicago River has been dyed green on St Patrick’s Day.

The tradition began by accident after a plumber, who was using dye to detect leaks into the river, discovered his orange dye turned green when mixed with water. City officials decided to add dye to the river to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, however during the first attempt they used too much dye and turned the river bright green for a week.

Well after spent 7 years enjoying the St. Patrick;s day in Dublin, I can never find the same feeling again here in China ! I miss you, Ireland, drinks and friends ! I will be back some day for sure ! Wait for me ~!
